Title: Grimm Fairy Tales Presents: Robyn Hood

We’re back with the second installment of Robyn Hood by Zenescope and writer Pat Shand has once again delivered. I found this book to be a wonderful compliment to the first issue where, not only did we get some action, the setup was done really well. Issue #2 continues to delve into Robyn’s past, without distracting from what’s happening in the ‘here and now’.

Will the real Mr. J please stand up?

SPOILER ALERT: I might be slightly spoilerific here, so if you haven’t read the book yet, consider yourself warned.

It’s a little tough “reviewing” a book like Batman #13. With all the hype, everyone knows about it and is already discussing it. They’ve picked up the book and already formed their opinion of it. So… let’s call this little write up of mine less of a “review” and more of a “discussion”.

Title: Grimm Fairy Tales Presents: Robyn Hood

Despite what the cover may have you believe, this book is no ‘bust’. Robyn Hood provides a unique and fresh perspective on the character we all know and love who stole from the rich and gave to the poor.  In this book, Robyn (notice the different spelling) is a young girl who comes from the realm: Myst.  Fairy tales are integrated into this, and several other, realms as you’ll quickly discover throughout the dialogue.  Subtle hints are dropped to other realms that exist as characters, you may be familiar with, are mentioned.

Where’s Lara?

As frustrating as it was to hear that a third creative team would be taking over Superman in a year, I did not want to set this book down once I started reading.  Scott Lobdell hit a Kryptonian home run with this issue, in which we are introduced to the New 52 Jor-El and Lara, DC’s first power couple. While everyone knows the fate of the doomed planet, this story is more about who Ma and Pa El were, as a couple, and how they dealt with adversity.

Ok. I’m just going to come right out and say it. I don’t like what they’re doing with Shazam. At all. Now look, I can’t say I know all the particulars of the once Captain Marvel/now Shazam. I can’t say I was a big Shazam fan growing up, either. I do vaguely remember watching the show on TV, but that was a bit before my time.

Like fine wine, this book will get better with age

Grifter #0 won’t be a book that impresses you now, but as future issues roll by, it will be known as a required back issue.  As much as I loathe Rob Liefeld as an artist, and I’m not alone, he does a fairly good job at coming up with good plot points.  He could use a little help in the actual fleshing out of the story though.  Although he’s departing from the title with issue 14, I feel he did an admirable job setting Grifter up for the next year. Just, whatever you do, ignore the cover!

Review of Spider-Men #1-4 (Marvel)

Ok. I admit it. I don’t like change. I’m not comfortable saying I’m a “purist,” either. I think (I hope) I’m a little bit more open minded than that. But, any time DC/Marvel start announcing changes to this character or that universe, I tend to give into my knee jerk reaction. Especially when these announcements involved a “death” of a character (main, or otherwise).

Spider-Men

Why are they swinging around without their masks on?!?! Why, oh why!?!?

Rebel Blood involves Chuck Neville, a forest ranger with a wife and son, who commands Fire Tower #6 deep in the woods. He’s all alone, save for a young female assistant and Danny Whitehead, a poacher he’s had some dealings with.

With his isolated surroundings, he’s had plenty of time to think about his strained marriage and let his imagination run wild.

An ominous call from officer Red comes across his radio one day. Red details the rampant infections and mutations that are showing up in people everywhere. He decides to leave and protect his family. But Chuck soon discovers that the infections aren’t just affecting people – the animals in the forest are also sick.
