100 DC Titles Removed From Barnes & Noble Stores

barnes-and-noble-bookseller

Last week, DC Comics announced that they struck an exclusive deal with Amazon to release 100 Graphic Novels and Trade Paperbacks on Amazon’s new Kindle Fire tablet. That deal certainly didn’t sit well with Barnes & Noble executives.

An e-mail was sent to all the Barnes and Noble stores on October 6th, instructing staff to pull all of the 100 graphic novels listed from the shelves, including Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, Sandman,  Fables, Batman: Year One, All Star Superman, Y The Last Man, V For Vendetta, and American Vampire. Although these titles are strong sellers for Barnes & Noble, none of those books will be available for purchase in their brick & mortar stores. You can still order them online from B&N and have them delivered to your home, but they will not be delivered to your local store for pickup.

Preview of The Death-Ray HC by Daniel Clowes

heylookitsthedeathraycover_thumb

Drawn & Quarterly is publishing Daniel Clowes’ The Death-Ray in October 2011. Originally published in Clowes’ anthology series, Eightball #23 by Fantagraphics Books in 2004, the Death-Ray story is getting a hardcover treatment.

Teen outcast Andy is an orphaned nobody with only one friend, the obnoxious but loyal Louie. They roam school halls and city streets, invisible to everyone but bullies and tormentors, until the glorious day when Andy takes his first puff on a cigarette. That night he wakes, heart pounding, soaked in sweat, and finds himself suddenly overcome with the peculiar notion that he can do anything. Indeed, he can and as he learns the extent of his new powers, he discovers a terrible and seductive gadget – a hideous compliment to his seething rage – that forever changes everything.”

“The DEATH-RAY utilizes the classic staples of the superhero genre – origin, costume, ray-gun. sidekick, fight scene – reconfiguring them in a story that is anything but morally simplistic. With subtle comedy, deft mastery and an obvious affection for the bold Pop Art exuberance of comic book design, Daniel Clowes delivers a contemporary meditation on the the darkness of the human psyche.

DC Comics and Nielsen Want You to Take Their Survey!

dc_comics_logo

DC Comics has hired Nielsen, a company known worldwide for their production of TV ratings, to compile data relating to their New 52 relaunch efforts.  This week through Friday, October 7th, Nielsen will offer an online survey specifically targeted to people who have purchased and read any or all of DC’s September offerings.

DC seems to be moving in the right direction in assessing who’s buying and reading their products. This data can be very influential in helping them find their weak points and their strengths, but it can also cause as many problems as it can potentially solve.

The data can present a clearer picture of DC Comics buyers than they have previously been able to see, but it’s still very early to compile significant data in what seemingly is a “one off” survey. The cost to run a professional ongoing survey over the course of several months might be too high to justify. DC could get a clearer picture of their demographic after the initial launch has settled in, maybe DC can have another survey in 6-12 months?
