Batman: Earth One by Geoff Johns & Gary Frank Finally Ships in 2012

BME1_HC_24Originally announced by DC Comics back in late 2009, Batman: Earth One by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank is finally being released in 2012! Earth One is an original hardcover graphic novel that retells the Batman legend in a contemporary setting.

Like Superman: Earth One by J. Michael Straczynski and Shane Davis that was released in 2010, changes some details of the origin and arrival of the Caped Crusader. Some of the changes being that Alfred doesn’t seem to be the frail butler of Bruce Wayne and Batman never left Gotham City in order to train his skills.

DC has also released a few unlettered pages from Batman: Earth One drawn by Gary Frank, which we have on display below.

Brian Bolland Cover Gallery

Brian Bolland Cover Gallery

The Joker

Brian Bolland has a distinctive style that is easily recognizable. His clean, detailed linework along with his attention to page composition has made him a highly sought after cover artist.

Brian Bolland (photo by Luigi Novi)Though most American comic book fans will recognize his beautifully detailed cover to Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore and illustrated by Bolland himself, he was already well versed in doing covers and interiors in the UK and also for DC Comics in the US. He was clearly one of the definitive Judge Dredd artists in 2000 A.D. and illustrated DC’s first 12 issue maxi series, Camelot 3000.

Bolland had several very lengthy runs as the cover artist on a few DC Comics titles including Animal Man, Wonder Woman, The Invisibles, Batman: Gotham Nights, and Jack of Fables. He drew so many consecutive covers of Animal Man, the first 56 issues to be precise, that regardless of who actually drew the interiors, when you would think of Animal Man, Bolland’s artwork would instantly spring to mind.

T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents Character Designs by Wes Craig

Menthor!

DC Comics has released a few pages of artist Wes Craig’s character designs for T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents #1. Craig stated that he based the characters’ looks on CAFU’s designs from the previous series and that he “… stuck to them pretty closely, making little tweaks that would suit (his) style better.”

Take a look and judge for yourselves.

“Their powers: Usually the artist display’s a hero’s super-powers as majestic and awe-inspiring. But with the Agents, their powers can potentially kill them so I wanted the feeling that their powers were a bit out of their control and that it made them feel a bit sick inside to use them.

Lightning: I love characters with super-speed.

NoMan: I wanted to give myself a challenge in how to draw his invisibility powers without just using a Photoshop fade-out effect, and I think I’ve found some fun solutions.

Colleen: Colleen’s going to have a fancy new ‘season two’ haircut, but we hadn’t thought of that yet when I was drawing these designs.

The Subterraneans: I had a kick drawing these guys since it was my first major contribution to the look of the series. I tried to stick to the basic idea of the original 60′s design with these guys, but make them a bit scarier and more reptilian. Drawing their subterranean kingdom has also been a lot of fun.”

Superman

DC Comics has announced that Keith Giffen and Dan Jurgens will be the creative force on Superman starting with Superman #7. Jurgens will handle the writing chores while Giffen will provide the artwork.

Being a man of many artistic styles, I wonder which one Giffen will opt for? Maybe a Jimmy Olson Kirby style? A Curt Swan classic style? I doubt it will be his Trencher style! We’ll find out soon enough.
