I can’t really say I’ve got my finger on the pulse of the comics community. I try and keep up with THE news and such, but… you know. Things happen. Things like… Li’l Gotham (now that’s what we in the biz call a “segue”). This one almost got under my radar. Almost. And thank the maker it didn’t. Because, this is a great li’l (get it? “Li’L”?!?) book.

It’s a little tough “reviewing” a book like Batman #13. With all the hype, everyone knows about it and is already discussing it. They’ve picked up the book and already formed their opinion of it. So… let’s call this little write up of mine less of a “review” and more of a “discussion”.

Title: “Every End has a Beginning”

Where’s Lara?

As frustrating as it was to hear that a third creative team would be taking over Superman in a year, I did not want to set this book down once I started reading. Scott Lobdell hit a Kryptonian home run with this issue, in which we are introduced to the New 52 Jor-El and Lara, DC’s first power couple. While everyone knows the fate of the doomed planet, this story is more about who Ma and Pa El were, as a couple, and how they dealt with adversity.

Ok. I’m just going to come right out and say it. I don’t like what they’re doing with Shazam. At all. Now look, I can’t say I know all the particulars of the once Captain Marvel/now Shazam. I can’t say I was a big Shazam fan growing up, either. I do vaguely remember watching the show on TV, but that was a bit before my time.

Like fine wine, this book will get better with age

Grifter #0 won’t be a book that impresses you now, but as future issues roll by, it will be known as a required back issue. As much as I loathe Rob Liefeld as an artist, and I’m not alone, he does a fairly good job at coming up with good plot points. He could use a little help in the actual fleshing out of the story though. Although he’s departing from the title with issue 14, I feel he did an admirable job setting Grifter up for the next year. Just, whatever you do, ignore the cover!

Jim Lee outdoes himself with another stellar image of the romance between Superman and Wonder Woman.

DC Comics’ twitter profile (@DCComics) released the completed variant cover to Justice League #12 this afternoon. The image depicts the Superman and Wonder Woman in an affectionate side-by-side embrace as they hover over the planet Earth. The sun in the background creates a halo over their heads of biblical proportions.
