Like fine wine, this book will get better with age

Grifter #0 won’t be a book that impresses you now, but as future issues roll by, it will be known as a required back issue.  As much as I loathe Rob Liefeld as an artist, and I’m not alone, he does a fairly good job at coming up with good plot points.  He could use a little help in the actual fleshing out of the story though.  Although he’s departing from the title with issue 14, I feel he did an admirable job setting Grifter up for the next year. Just, whatever you do, ignore the cover!

PERFECTION IS POWER IN MARA
FROM IMAGE COMICS

MaraNew series by Brian Wood and Ming Doyle offers new take on superpowers

Press release

In December, Image Comics will publish the first issue of MARA, a new series by acclaimed writer Brian Wood and brilliant up-and-coming artist Ming Doyle. In a hyper-technological future where sports, war, and celebrity are the world’s obsessions, no one is more famous than Mara Prince. A model and athlete regarded as a paragon, Mara rises to an untouchable height of fame when she manifests superpowers on live television.

For Wood (Northlanders, Conan the Barbarian, DMZ), the connection between athlete and superhero is a natural one. "For a while I’ve seen a connection between superstar athletes and superheroes, both superficially and also in how each can be portrayed and dissected, lauded, and demonized by the societies they serve," he said, adding that the pressure to perform perfectly can be tremendous for young athletes. September 25th
is National Comic Book Day!

If you’ve never read a comic book… what’s stopping you?

Superheroes

Comic books have been around for over 100 years with, "The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck" published by Switzerland’s Rudolphe Töpffer in 1837. Since then we have seen everything from colorful characters, super heroes and talking animals. They’ve explored new planets, saved this one, and even crossed over into alternate realities.

Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and the Avengers top the pull list for many readers and collectors as they have spawned movies that have generated billions of dollars and reached out to those who have never considered buying a comic book. Odds are, if you’ve never spent four dollars on a comic book, you have spent almost twenty on a ticket to a 3D showing of a movie about one.

Review of Spider-Men #1-4 (Marvel)

Ok. I admit it. I don’t like change. I’m not comfortable saying I’m a “purist,” either. I think (I hope) I’m a little bit more open minded than that. But, any time DC/Marvel start announcing changes to this character or that universe, I tend to give into my knee jerk reaction. Especially when these announcements involved a “death” of a character (main, or otherwise).

Spider-Men

Why are they swinging around without their masks on?!?! Why, oh why!?!?
